Gulbenkian
Robinson, E. S. G. and M. Castro Hipólito. A Catalogue of the Calouste Gulbenkian Collection of Greek Coins. 2
vols. in four parts. Lisbon: Fundação Calouste
Gulbenkian, 1971 and 1989. 136 pp. + 200 pp., 99 ppl. Four matching
volumes with grey linen boards with gold stamping.
Hands down the finest private collection of Greek coins ever formed,
composed of 1085 spectacular coins of the highest artistic merit. The
organization is chronological instead of geographical, making the book
a little awkward to use, but the coins are so fantastic that all
problems are overshadowed. Includes extensive discussion of most coins
in the collection, touching on the historical, numismatic and art
historical aspects. Owning a coin struck from the same dies as a
Gulbenkian coin actually means something!
